When Hannah was diagnosed with autism, we immediately began researching what we could “do about it.” We read about lots of different therapies and felt quite overwhelmed. But amidst those feelings of confusion, the Lord ordered our steps. We started with a therapy we could do ourselves and start right away: ABA. After that became a regular habit, we added the dietary changes and got those settled in. Then a year or so later the Lord brought RDI therapy our way.
I explain the sequence of events to try to assure you that even therapies are a step-by-step process. I don’t want you to think that we added all of these therapies at the same time. And you don’t have to either.
Do your research, pray for guidance, and take the next step. Here is some information to help with the research part.
- ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis)—A great way to break down facts and teach them a little at a time without overwhelming the child.
- Dietary changes—Our experience with a GFCF diet and supplemental enzymes.
- RDI (Relationship Development Intervention)—A newer therapy that focuses on the social aspect of living with amazing results.
