While it is true that a rebel to those in authority will have a hard time submitting to God, I'm don't believe we can say that discipline is the way to life eternal. The other point with which I disagree is the author's interpretation of the "rod" (pages 212-214). My research is not supporting the distinction he draws between "a rod" and "the rod," so I cannot confirm his conclusion. I do, however, appreciate the parallels he draws between the uses of a physical rod and the characteristics that "rodlike discipline" should demonstrate.
